Donald Cohen Childhood Autism Lecture

Dr. Vikram Patel will deliver the Annual Donald Cohen Childhood Autism Lecture and the Montreal Children’s Hospital Pediatric Grand Rounds. He will present an overview of recent advances in autism research focused on developing and implementing low-cost intervention in low- and middle-income countries.

Global mental health is a relatively recent field focusing on the advancement of care delivery in regions with health or social inequities. Despite progress in this area, identification and treatment for mental health conditions and for developmental disorders remain a major challenge in most world communities. Dr. Vikram Patel, a pioneer in global mental health will converse with members of the public on emerging innovations in mental health globally. Joining the conversation is the Hon. Mike Lake, MP who will share his personal experience as the father of Jayden, who has autism.

Research Lecture

By Catherine Lord from Weill Cornell Medical College

Dr. Catherine Lord, Director of Center for Autism and the Developing Brain at Weill-Cornell Medical College, will deliver a research seminar on treatment development and outcome in autism. The seminar is organized by the Division of Child Psychiatry and will cover recent advances in research on intervention. The seminar is open to researchers and professionals.

The conference features top international speakers including  Simon Baron-Cohen, John Elder Robison, and Randy Lewis,  who will touch on a variety of topics of interest for the Autism community around the theme Human Diversity. The event will also include a Café scientifique featuring community researchers.

For ASD families, researchers, practitioners, and members of the public

Findings from the national Pathways study suggest that families affected by autism experience delays and difficulties in accessing and sustaining evidence-based care. Quebec lags behind all other provinces in delivering timely support around the period of diagnosis. In this community forum, we invited experts from public sector services to discuss these findings and to engage with members of the wider community in identifying necessary short and long-term policy transformation.
